OK time for an update review for Gretchen as I've been there 3 times in the last month for live concerts with mixed sonic experiences.

First of all let's start with the positives. Gretchen has some of my favourite music programming in Berlin. If you are interested in black music and it's electronic derivatives keep your eye on this place. The staff are also pretty cool from the bouncers to the bar staff I rarely have an issue here, BUT.

I am typing this again with a ringing in my eyes. The sound experience here really is so variable and more often than not poor. I stopped coming here for DJ sessions over a year ago as it was consistently bad but have continued coming for live events. Here is my experience of recent events.

Firstly Shabazzz Palaces. During the support act I had to speak to the sound engineers as the sound was ridiculously bad - some of the worst I've ever heard, there was no bass and it sounded like it was just coming out of the monitor speakers. I was met with the response "all the sound is coming through her mixing desk, we can't do anything" - how about speak to the artist for a start or do a sound check, that would be a good start?! Half way through her act the sound suddenly doubled in volume as it started to come through some other speakers that sounded like they had just been switched on! The main act Shabazz Palaces sounded fine.

Next up was Azymuth live and what a nice sounding night. I guess it helps that there were just three band members with traditional instruments and no effects (vocoder accepted) plus I guess they have an experienced tour manager and demanding rider after 40 years of playing together!

Tonight was KoKoKo! a great Congolese electronic fusion act and the reason why my ears are ringing, although it is not their fault as such. I know they were playing home made instruments coupled with Debruit's modern electronic set up but the second vocalist could hardly be heard and there was very little separation or distinction between the various instruments. I enjoyed the concert, carried along with the great tunes and great performance but now I have cycled home and am in a silent flat I can hear how bruised my ears are from the experience. It really is not acceptable that after paying good money to see a concert, I have to suffer, what is effectively hearing damage afterwards.

As much as it pains me my hearing is so valuable to me as a music industry worker that I will no longer be returning for any live concerts to Gretchens for fear of damaging my hearing further. It's a real shame it would have been my second home in Berlin.
