Geschichte

In 1975 a group of athletes from the town of Rendsburg participated for the first time in the International Youth Games in Rendsburgs twin town Aalborg.
Since 1975 the town of Aalborg has organised International Youth Games together with the SIFA (Samvirkende Idræts-Foreninger Aalborg) with the frequency of the Olympics, which means in a four yearly games cycle. All twin towns, meanwhile there are more than 30, are invited to these events. Consequently young people from Rendsburg have enjoyed the hospitality of Aalborg already ten times, namely in 1975, 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991,1995, 1999, 2003, 2007,2011 and for the last time in the summer of 2015.
In 1980 the town of Rendsburg returned the favour for the first time inviting young athletes from all the twin towns to take part in the Youth Games during the first week of the summer holidays. The Youth Games of 1980 were only sporting events.
The following Youth Games were complemented by cultural events and were called "International Rendsburg Youth Games and Cultural Events". They were organised in 1985, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. In 2016 they will be held for the ninth time from 28 July to 2 August.
Besides athletes aged between 14 and 16, adolescents and young adults have been invited to Rendsburg to participate in the fields of music, dance and theatre in order to meet and demonstrate their skills.
In 1994 Rendsburg as well as Lancaster were invited to take part in the International Youth Games in Almere in the Netherlands, one of the twin towns of Aalborg.
During the conferences on the occasion of the Youth Games in Almere in 1994 and in Aalborg in 1995 the towns of Aalborg (www.aalborg.dk) (www.aalborgevents.dk) (www.sifa.dk), Almere (www.almere.nl) (www.youthgames.nl) , Lancaster (www.lancaster.gov.uk) and Rendsburg agreed that every year the Youth Games should be held in one of these four cities. In addition to that the town hosting the games should invite its own twin and associate towns and decide whether to organise not only sporting competitions but also cultural events.
The next "International Youth Games and Cultural Events" will be held under the new name of "Youth Games" in Rendsburg from 28 July to 2 August 2016.
