About us

Karin`s Guesthouse is a family run business, which was started by my parents Mike & Karin with just a single accommodation in Gillrath in 2001. Our first ever booking was a complete misunderstanding, with my dad double booking incoming requests which lead to our first ever guests sleeping in my old bedroom at my parent´s home. Pretty embarrassing, but it has resulted into a long and ongoing friendship with them.

A lot of time has passed since then, which brought a lot of experience and growth and up until now there have been no more double bookings ... We are currently operating up to 8 accommodations; 6 full family houses and 2 smaller apartments.

Through living in the US for more than 5 years, my family and I experienced the cultural differences from a German - US perspective and we know what it feels like to be new to a country. That is why we try our best to make your stay at our Guesthouse as comfortable and homey as possible.

In 2004 I married Alan, who at that time was a British Serviceman. We married in the pavilion (which my Dad built for us) in our back yard. Even our wedding was shared with friends and many former and current guests at that time. With it being a night wedding with an all-night party in our own back garden, it was an unforgettable experience and we would really like to thank Pastor Nunn of the Christian Powerhouse of Prayer who made it even better!

In 2003, I was living and working in Düsseldorf as a Procurement Manager for one of the largest advertising agencies in the world, when I slowly started to take on the accounting for our small Business. Finally in 2006, after my mom suffered a severe heart attack in 2003, I took over the business fully and now operate Karin´s Guesthouse together with my husband Alan.

Being married to Alan, an ex-British Serviceman and having first-hand experience with the Military Way of Life, we try to make Karin´s Guesthouse more than just a guesthouse!

All our accommodations have been designed with you as our guest in mind. From the trampoline for the kids, to the dog bowls and litter boxes for your pets, we try and make sure that you have everything you need. And if we don´t have what you´re looking for, just ask.

In 2015 we acquired our first fleet of VW Polo's to take our guests experience to another level. All are equipped with built-in GPS/Navigation, ISOFix child seat connectors, All-season tires, Bluetooth Hands-Free and Automatic transmission. We have a car for each of our accommodations and they are for our guests to use throughout their stay with us.

We operate our own Airport Shuttle Service for the guesthouse and for all English speakers in Germany, we have an administrative assistance company called King & Mayr (www.king-mayr.com). All-in-all, we as a guesthouse and as a family try to make your transition as easy and comfortable as possible.

Das Hotel liegt ganz in der Nähe eines der GK-Tore und nicht viel weiter von der Internationalen Schule entfernt. Es war auch ein großer Bonus für uns, das Gästehausauto für die vielen Ausflüge in die Gegend zu haben, nachdem wir Autos verkauft und verschifft hatten. Wir können Alan nicht genug dafür danken, dass er sich um uns gekümmert hat, als wir das GK-Gebiet verlassen. Sehr empfehlenswert!!  Original I called Karin's in a pinch and Alan was able to accommodate my family of 4 and 2 cats for the entire timeframe we'd requested.  It was questionable at first, but Alan put in the effort to ensure we could stay until departure.  The check-in/out process was quick and easy and the accommodations we perfect for our family; we love British TV!!  Located very close to either GK gate and not much farther to the International school.  It was also a huge bonus for us to have the guesthouse car for the many trips in the area after we'd sold and shipped cars.  We can't thank Alan enough for taking care of us as we leave the GK area.  Highly recommend!!

Auch hier gibt es keine Worte, um das Maß an Professionalität und Unterstützung während dieses großen Übergangs in meinem Leben zu beschreiben. Kudos an Alan und die gesamte Crew von Karin's Guesthouse! Sehr empfehlenswert. Prior to transitioning to area during summer 2020, Alan tried everything possible to accommodate my arrival; however, with COVID and so many other uncontrollable factors, I was not able to get an apartment once I first arrived. Thankfully, after about 6 weeks, an apartment became available. Although the initial reservation was only supposed to extend through about three weeks, Alan worked his magic and I was able to have temporary lodging until moving into my home over two months later. Again, there are no words to describe the level of professionalism and support during this major transition in my life. Kudos to Alan and the entire Karin's Guesthouse crew! Highly Recommended.

Alan was very accommodating and helpful. The home was kid and pet dog friendly. We had a great location that was near walking paths, grocery, and parks. The house was equipped with a crib, 4 small beds, 1 large bed, a full kitchen toaster oven vs conventional oven, cell phone, new VW to drive and if they did not have something Alan was a phone call away. If you are coming into the area we highly recommend staying with Karins.

Der Shuttle-Service kostete etwa 300 Dollar, was wir auf unserer Reiseforderung geltend machten. Als wir in der Pension ankamen, traf uns der Gastgeber an der Tür, um mit dem Gepäck zu helfen und uns die Wohnung zu zeigen. Wir waren im zweiten Stock eines Einfamilienhauses. Wir haben die gesamte zweite Etage. Es ist ein Apartment mit 2 Schlafzimmern und 1 Badezimmer und einem großen überdachten Balkon ca. 150 SF mit Blick auf eine Pferdeweide.  Die Wohnung hatte alles, was wir in einer vorübergehenden Unterkunft brauchen könnten, außer Essen, das unser Sponsor für uns brachte. Die Wohnung war komplett eingerichtet, der Fernseher hat ein englischsprachiges Kabelpaket, das Festnetz hat kostenlose Anrufe in lokale Nummern und in die USA. Es gibt ein kostenloses Prepaid-Leihhandy, zu dem Sie auch Minuten hinzufügen können. Die Küche verfügt über Geschirr, Töpfe und Pfannen, ein Kochfeld, einen Toaster, eine Mikrowelle, einen Kühl- und Gefrierschrank, einen Geschirrspüler, einen Wasserkocher und eine Kaffeemaschine.  Es gibt ein Schlafzimmer mit zwei Einzelbetten und ein Schlafzimmer mit einem Queensize-Bettrahmen mit zwei Einzelmatratzen darauf hier üblich. Alle Betten sind vorhanden, zusammen mit Nachtlichtern, Wecker, Kommode und Kommode. Sie haben sogar eine Kiste mit Spielzeug für Ihre Kinder bereitgestellt.  Am Ende der Gasse gibt es lange Pfade durch den Wald, die sich hervorragend zum Laufen, Spazierengehen und für einen Hund nach draußen eignen. When we arrived at the Amsterdam Airport, the shuttle driver was waiting for us just outside security. He led us directly to his large van that fit our dog’s large crate and all of our luggage with no problem. The shuttle driver stopped at a highway rest stop so we could get our dog out and let her go potty and give her some food and water.  The shuttle service was about $300, which we claimed on our travel claim. Arriving at the guesthouse, the host met us at the door to help with luggage and show us the apartment. We were on the second floor of a detached house. We have the entire second floor. It’s a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with a large covered balcony ~150 SF overlooking a horse pasture.  The apartment had everything we could need in temporary housing, except actual food, which our sponsor brought for us. The apartment was fully furnished, the TV has an English speaking cable package, the landline has free calls to local numbers and the US. There’s a free loaner pre-paid cell phone you can add minutes to as well. The kitchen has dishes, pots and pans, a stove top, toaster, microwave, fridge and freezer, dishwasher, electric kettle and coffee pot.  There’s one bedroom with two twin beds and one bedroom with a queen bed frame with two twin mattresses on it common here.  All bedding is provided, along with nightlights, alarm clock, dresser and bureau. They have even provided a box of toys for your kids.  At the end of the lane there are long trails through the woods, which are great for running, walking and getting a dog outside.  You’ll see many people walking their dogs and horses.  Plus they provide a loaner car for you, which is amazing as you don’t have to pay to rent a car and shipping our vehicles will take several weeks. This is a large cost savings for us.
