The STEP training (Student Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion) is an action-oriented entrepreneurship training, which is funded by the DAAD and the German Commission for UNESCO.
Prof. Michael Frese and Dr. Michael Gielnik founded STEP in 2006. The training content itself was developed in cooperation with lecturers of the Makerere University Business School (Uganda), Uganda Christian University, and Kyambogo University and Leuphana University of Lüneburg. The first implementations took place in Uganda under the management of Kim Marie Bischoff.
Since then STEP was successfully implemented at different Institutions in Uganda, Kenya, Liberia (project management: Kim Maire Bischoff), Rwanda and Tanzania (project management: Miriam Stark).
The STEP training is based on the action-regulation theory (Frese, 2009; Frese & Zapf, 1994; Hacker, 1998) and views action as the most important factor for successful entrepreneurship.
During the training lecturers of the different institutions deliver the STEP training to their students. They learn how to deliver the STEP training and its action-oriented training approach with the help of a train-the-trainers workshop conducted by the German STEP team. Teaching lecturers of the institutions in how to conduct the STEP training leads to a more sustainable implementation in the long run.
Every implementation of the STEP training is evaluated according to highest scientific standards. These evaluations allows us to gain insights into the effects of the training on the students’ and teachers’ change in knowledge and skills, the impact of the training on students’ and teachers’ behavior and the long-term success of the training.
