The Model United Nations Delegation of the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management
The National Model United Nations (NMUN) is a simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In a simulation such as NMUN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.
National Model United Nations takes place annually in New York in March or April. Over 4,000 students from all over the world participated in the 2007 simulation. The conference lasts 4 days.
Although NMUN is not directly affiliated with the United Nations, its unique status allows for certain privileges such as speaking to official UN representatives or having certain meetings in UN premises. In the last years, NMUN has hosted such renowned and respected opening speakers as H.E. Mr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, H.E. Mr. Kofi Annan, Ambassador Bill Richardson of the U.S., Ambassador Allan Rock of Canada, Ambassador Karl Paschke of Germany and many others.
The participation in NMUN is offered as a Studium Generale (general studies) course to the Bachelor students of the third and fifth semester and organized by two doctoral assistants of the Chair of Macroeconomics and International Economics, who were responsible for the structure of the course and assisted the students in assessing the political, historical and economic background of the assigned country.
