Geschichte

Das Baumhaus is an open socio-cultural project in Wedding. We connect, inspire and empower each other, neighbors, organizations and local changemakers working for transition to sustainability. In our project space, people and projects from a broad variety of backgrounds come together, meet and collaborate.

Who we are & What we do

We are a self-organized, grassroots initiative grown out of the neighborhood, with Karen & Scott, the project co-founders at the core of the Baumhaus project. Since 2012, more than 300 people have collaboratively developed the project, organized events, meetings, initiated new groups, and in 2016 renovated a storefront space into a pretty unique project space. We are organized as a non-profit association, a social business and above all, an open network.

We are growing a diverse community, building a project and event space, and supporting good ideas and projects. Scott & Karen are managing the Baumhaus project space as a social business (GbR), creating an inspiring environment and providing room for meetings and events of social and ecological projects. Our non-profit association (Verein) is organizing events and several groups in the Baumhaus and at other places. Together, we’re building a local hub for people who want to make the world a better place in our neighborhood, Berlin and beyond.

We want to contribute locally to an attractive culture of change. With social and ecological crises accelerating, civil society’s collaboration and creativity for democracy, sustainability and solidarity seems more crucial than ever. For that, we think, we need more spaces for meaningful engagement, where we can meet, support each other and collaborate, transforming our neighborhoods and cities.

What we want to create: a local hub for p.e.a.c.e.s of sustainable development

At Baumhaus, we aim to create a space where we as neighbors can address the transition to sustainability from a broad spectrum of perspectives. Transitioning from a culture of domination and exploitation to a culture of care, maintaining a dynamic balance in relations to oneself, others, and nature – that’s the project of our (life)time. And while it’s about development in the social and economic world, it’s also about personal development. We think, working for change is bit like practicing an art: it’s about what we do in our every day life, and it works better if we have fun and a supportive community.

Baumhaus is a platform for all those P.E.A.C.E.S. of being a good neighbor and actor of change – bringing together perspectives that are: Personal Who am I, where am I at in my life, where do I want to be and how do I get there? How can we take care of ourselves so that we can live more balanced and satisfying lives? Ecologic How can we live in balance with the ecosystem and protect life on this planet? Aesthetic How can we understand and be in touch with the many ways it’s possible to sense the world? Cultural How can we appreciate and learn from our differences but also focus on what we have in common? Economic How can we advance towards more balanced, zero waste and humane ways of production and consumption? Social How can we communicate with each other, to understand and work collaboratively to support each other?
